The Cycle of Defeat

This graphic shows the merry-go-round that many of us feel trapped in when we don't actively battle lust.  If this cycle is familiar to you then you probably haven't even started the battle yet.  Here's how the cycle works.

Temptation begins with opportunity,  usually you find yourself alone in front of a computer.  Giving into temptation is nearly automatic because lust has been given free reign in our hearts. Sure, there may be some resistance but there isn't any foundation for battling the lust and defeat can feel inevitable.  The lust becomes sin when the mind concedes and the deed is done. As with all sin the pleasure is fleeting, leaving only emptiness and guilt.

Contrition usually follows,  desperate prayers for forgiveness and empty promises are hallmarks.  Finally some temporary relief comes from wrongly claiming God's grace or by ignoring the conscience and pretending that all is well.  At the end of the cycle nothing has truly changed that would allow escape when temptation inevitably comes.
