Don't let your theology be an excuse.

The believer caught in sexual addiction gives themselves a whole range of excuses for why they continue to live in the flesh (Satan's Lies).  By far the most subtle excuse comes from our own generalizations related to theology.

the·ol·o·gy
noun
noun: theology
  1. the study of the nature of God and religious belief.
    • religious beliefs and theory when systematically developed.

Notice that theology is a man studying God.  Theology is an attempt to systematize our understanding of God based on what He has revealed to us and our own intellect.  The resulting systems usually end up presenting a lopsided view of scripture, limiting the scope and authority of scripture, twisting scripture to fit the system, and/or overly simplifying scripture.
God...has not confined Himself within the narrow limits of any school of doctrine—high, low or moderate. He has revealed Himself. He has told out [made known] the deep and precious secrets of His heart. He has unfolded His eternal counsels, as to the Church, as to Israel, the Gentiles, and the wide creation. Men might as well attempt to confine the ocean in buckets of their own formation as to confine the vast range of divine revelation within the feeble enclosures of human systems of doctrine. It cannot be done, and it ought not to be attempted. Better far to set aside the systems of theology and schools of divinity, and come like a little child to the eternal fountain of Holy Scripture, and there drink in the living teachings of God’s Spirit. - C.H. Mackintosh
Furthermore, once a student takes a stand in favor of a theology or a denomination, pride often enters the picture.  The natural man, once they have defined themselves as part of a belief system, will seek to establish that belief by limiting their studies exclusively to writers in agreement with that system.

When talking about holiness we should be looking at the scriptures.
All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;  -2 Timothy 3:16
This means that the Word of God is the only source of truth that has the power to reveal our hearts and bring us back to God.
For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. - Hebrews 4:12
I see so many people holding on to theological generalities that leave them stagnant and paralyzed.  If God is convicting you of your sin and you are waiting on Him to take care of it then you are fooling yourself.  You need to go to the scriptures to judge your true thoughts and intentions.  You need to see the imperatives and submit to His commandments.

Don't allow theology to be an excuse to be disobedient. Go to the Word.
