The most important step in the recovery process is restoring communion with God. Our sin, especially unrepentant sin, puts a barrier in our communion with God. (Isaiah 59:2) We feel the isolation and it grieves our souls. We are essentially starving our spirits (the new nature) of it's food and grieving the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.
In the Bible we see the desperation when King David felt the separation from God (Psalm 32, Psalm 51). We see the anguish of Christ on the cross when we was separated from the Father (Matthew 27:46), and we see the futility of running from God in the book of Jonah. Separation from God is normal for unbelievers (2 Cor 6:14-15), but for believers being separated from God is like walking in a barren wasteland where there is no relief.
The Lord is our strength, our hope, our guide, our comfort, and our shield. It is vital to fix our eyes on Christ (Romans 12:2) and cast ourselves at His feet. We must be connected to Him through communion with our Lord and Savior to have any hope of escaping the clutches of sin.
Communion with God is a result of the work of Christ, where we have direct access to the Father as adopted sons through the firstborn from the dead. Communion with God is the personal fellowship we have with God. God speaks to us through His Word, His Spirit, and other means. He is involved in every aspect of our lives, even the number of hairs on our head! We commune with Him through prayer, reading the bible, listening and obeying. As we grow in knowledge, faith, holiness, purity, good works and sufferings we also increase our dependence on, and gratefulness to God.

When we walk away from God we can restore communion through true repentance, submission and obedience. As we seek Him in faith He leads us back into communion with Him. Step by step He restores us and we begin to grow again.
