True Brokenness

What is the broken spirit that God will not despise?  (Psalms 51:17)

Brokenness is the state where we recognize our helplessness and yield our will to God.

When we have exhausted our effort, ran out of excuses, are tired of living with the weight of a guilty conscience, then our spirits are broken. The key to being broken is not necessarily emotional grief but rather deciding to listen and give yourself to God's will without holding back.

God desires a broken heart because He wants to form us, soften our hearts and bring us closer to Him.  When we live in disobedience we gradually harden our hearts.  Once we are broken we allow Him to pick up the pieces, heal us and reshape us.
I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. - Ezekiel 36: 25-27
