Consequences of unmortified sin

From John Owen's Overcoming Sin and Temptation (reworded):
"Unmortified sin will do two things:  It will weaken the soul and deprive it of energy. And it will darken the soul and deprive it of its comfort and peace."
These are the effects of sin that is allowed to freely operate in our hearts:

1) "It weakens the soul and deprives it of its strength (Ps 38:3,8)
2) "It untunes and unframes the heart itself by entangling its affections" (1 John 2:15, 3:17)
3) "It fills the thoughts with contrivances about it"
4) "It breaks out and actually hinders duty"
5) "As sin weakens (you) it darkens the soul"
