Transgression speaks to the ungodly within his heart; There is no fear of God before his eyes.
For it flatters him in his own eyes. Concerning the discovery of his iniquity and the hatred of it. The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit; He has ceased to be wise and to do good. He plans wickedness upon his bed; He sets himself on a path that is not good; He does not despise evil.-Psalms 36:1-4
Have you ever wondered where those little voices in your head come from? They are often characterized as an angel on one shoulder and a demon on the other, whispering instruction in our ears.
The angel can be our conscience, knowledge of right and wrong, and even the Holy Spirit's conviction. But what about the devil? Where do those whispers come from?
This cartoonish depiction of our thoughts is actually a fairly accurate representation of the battle being waged between the flesh and the spirit, our hearts and our minds.
Psalms 36 makes a vital point about sin. The word for transgression, pesha (strong's H6588) means defection, revolt, rebellion, sin, transgression. What is the source of the voice in our heads urging us to sin? It is the rebellious nature of the flesh that is bound in our hearts.
We must realize the nature of the battle with sin. We are waging war against our own rebellious natures. For the unbeliever this isn't a war, they follow the urges of their hearts. But for the believer it is a daily battle.
The wonderful thing about being a Christian is this: God has won the war and given us a complete arsenal with which to battle (Ephesian 6:10-18). He also provides escape routes (1 Corinthians 10:13), and when we rely on Him He also provides reinforcements through fellow believers, He strengthens us and provides periods of Rest & Relaxation.
