The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?- Jeremiah 17:9
First understand that you are fighting a battle on two fronts:
1) The Spiritual Battle: Here we battle against the temptations and influence of the world around us, including the spiritual attacks from Satan and his followers (Eph 6:12).
2) The Inner Battle: This battle takes place within our minds and with our lusts and pride. Notice from the verse above that discernment is often more difficult regarding things of the heart. While we may understand our sin, our hearts can immobilize us with creative and subtle deceit.
The good news is that the Lord has not left us helpless. As we will see He reveals the true nature of our hearts and of the enemies schemes, He equips us to defend ourselves, and He graciously prevents us from becoming ensnared as we walk with Him.
