Communion with God

What is true communion with God?

True communion with God is relying on Him, delighting in Him, and having an intimate relationship with Him.  It is doing everything in faith (Romans 14:23) with a clear conscience before  Him.

True communion includes:
  • Learn about Him. In order to have true communion we must submit ourselves to the authority of scripture, otherwise we are trusting our own knowledge rather than the truth laid out in God's word.  We are only fooling ourselves if we believe that we can have communion with God without studying and submitting to His word.
  • Prayer.  We do not grow in understanding, trust, dependence and love without spending time speaking to God.  He wants us to bring our desires, struggles, doubts, worries, and dreams to Him in prayer.  He knows what we need but still wants us to ask. (Matthew 6:8)
  • Growth. Thirdly, as we bring these things to Him and see His guidance, provision and grace.  As a result our faith grows, we trust Him more, and the time spent with Him grows sweeter and more important.  God wants us to depend on Him, to devote our lives to Him.
  • Fruit.  As we learn we must also obey.  We are created for good works (Ephesians 2:10), and the fruit we bare is the proof of our faith and that Christ lives in us.  Jesus himself learned obedience through suffering (Hebrews 5:8) and it is clear in scripture that if we love God we will obey His commandments and cherish them.
  • Remembrance.  I would be remiss to leave out the sacraments.  What a sweet time where we come together to remember the sacrifice Christ made on our behalf.  It refocuses us on Christ and we feel the overwhelming wonder of His love.
