I cannot underemphasize the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer. If we attempt to do things our own way or in our own time we will fail. Often times we will ignore the prodding from the Holy Spirit because we don't like the instructions (ie confession, etc).
We must understand that we can work against the Holy Spirit (Acts 7:51) and we can quench Him (1 Thessalonians 5:19). The conviction of the Spirit will seem to grow weaker, not because the He is less powerful or less alive but we blocking our spiritual ears and searing our consciences (The seared conscience).
In order to battle against sin we must be in tune with the Holy Spirit. When we are listening to God's Spirit within us His power enables us to strongly resist, knowing that we will not be overcome.

The work of the Holy Spirit includes:
- He convicts (John 16:8)
- He reveals truth (16:13)
- He gives us the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16).
- He is our interpretor (Romans 8:26-27)
- He is a comforter (John 14:16)
- He helps us pray and helps our weakness (Romans 8:26)
- He reveals the deep things of God (1 Corinthians 2:11)
- He strengthens and encourages (Acts 9:31)
- He is our advocate (Romans 8:16)
