It is precisely when we have cleaned house (Clean house) and have seemingly set our lives in order that Satan turns up the heat. He will bring tremendous pressure to pull us back into bondage. The world wants us to believe there is no escape, that living free from sin is impossible. It seems as though every moment brings a new temptation to sin, a new opportunity to fall.
Notice the danger in Luke 11:24-26
“When the unclean spirit goes out of a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding any, it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ “And when it comes, it finds it swept and put in order. “Then it goes and takes along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and live there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.”
Satan's desire is for someone who is free of the bondage of sin to ultimately be enslaved even deeper. Only by daily battling these spiritual forces can we hope to resist the pressure.
Thank God the pressure doesn't last. When we give satan no quarter he will flee. We must keep our eyes on Christ, disciplining our bodies and resisting evil, never letting up. The peace and rest and freedom and the clear conscience that life in Christ brings must be maintained through the discipline and mortification of the flesh.
