I Can't...

I Can't.

An interesting statement.
It can be a true statement and an excuse at the same time.  It can keep us from trying or obeying.

"I Can't" can be:
  1. A True Statement - "I can't overcome sin in my own power."  Unbelievers can stop behaviors and break habits, but they can't change their hearts.  The believer has the conviction and power of the Holy Spirit enabling them to overcome sin both in action and in their hearts.  It is true that sin cannot be mortified without the Holy Spirit helping us, but we have a big part in that process.
  2. A False Statement - "I am unable to do anything myself to change my situation, its all God (and therefore His responsibility) to pull me out of my sin."  This thinking might sound good on the surface (why not default to supposedly waiting and relying on God?)  but it isn't biblical.  God has given us everything we need to follow Him faithfully and also given us the liberty to disobey.  The whole idea that might be a legitimate reason we can't obey God should be anathema to the believer. We must face the reality and ugliness of sin, expose it to the light and kill it using every means that God has graciously provided for us.
Whenever you think to yourself "I can't do this", ask yourself "Self, why can't I?" Is it because God says I can't? Is it because I am physically unable to do it? Or is it something deeper and more serious attempting to drag you down.
